Credentialing Resource Center Connection

National credentialing and privileging expert Sally J. Pelletier, CPCS, CPMSM, delivers useful and timely information in her weekly " Credentialing Resource Center Connection" column.

The human element

Sally J. Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS, is a consultant with The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., specializing in the areas of credentialing and privileging.

Dear credentialing colleague:

Unfortunately, at some organizations, I find that perfunctory reviews of credentials files are still taking place. Rarely is this due to a lack of either caring or conscientiousness on the part of the reviewers. Instead, this cursory evaluation may be due to a lack of education and appropriate orientation related to best practice credentialing. This lack of proper training leads to a misunderstanding about the importance of the credentialing and privileging function, which in turn leads to a less-than-stellar process.

Credentialing Resource Center spotlight: Policy and procedures library

The Credentialing Resource Center (CRC) spotlight is a new series of articles that will show you how to get the most out of you online resource center. Online physician consults growing, some insurers reimburse for them
Do your privileges allow practitioners to provide patient consults via the internet? More physicians are taking advantage of this online option, especially since insurer like Aetna and Cigna began paying for them nationwide in January, according to a July 21 article on SunSentinel.com.

Ask the expert: Where can I learn more about the new Joint Commission scoring categories?
Last week, The Joint Commission revised its online 2009 prepublication standards to include information about the new survey scoring process. The new process will take effect January 1, 2009. The public can log on to The Joint Commission’s Web site to read the standards, which include a key at the bottom of each page explaining what each symbol represents. For example, if there is a letter D with a circle around it next to an element of performance (EP) that means documentation is required for that EP.

Tip of the week: Consider the following three areas when developing privileging criteria
Medical staffs must take into account the following three areas when developing criteria for privileges:

Assessing the Competency of Low-Volume Practitioners:
The Joint Commission requires that hospitals verify physician competence using performance data. Yet organizations often have little or no data related to the competency of low- and no-volume physicians. Medical staff leaders are therefore challenged to develop a strategy that guides the hospital's relationship with low- and no-volume providers, and medical staff services departments are challenged to establish systems to verify physician competence. This fully updated book and CD-ROM set offers the necessary tools and strategies for medical staff leaders and professionals to manage the increasing number of low- and no-volume providers and comply with Joint Commission standards.
