Featured blog post: Physician health programs offer high success rate for impaired practitioners

If you’ve helped arrange treatment for a practitioner with substance abuse problems, chances are you’re familiar with state physician health programs (PHP).

Recent studies of 16 state PHPs indicate an outstanding success rate with physicians monitored by state PHPs over an average 7.2 years Of 904 physicians, 78% completed this monitoring without relapse. Of those who did relapse, additional treatment resulted in over 90% doing well at the end of the study period.

News stories examine emergency practitioner’s privileges in Haiti

As emergency practitioners from around the world rush to Haiti to treat earthquake victims, MSPs may wonder if any credentialing and privileging exists for these practitioners. Disaster privileging policies are designed by medical staffs to handle similar situations in American hospitals, yet the scale of destruction in Haiti is so large that healthcare is being delivered in a less organized way.

A recent article in the Boston Globe highlights the work of several New England-based doctors in Haiti. Additionally, Paul Levy, president and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston posted similar physician-focused stories on his blog Running a Hospital. Combined, these stories help paint a picture of how practitioners are working in disaster situations and can provide learning opportunities for medical staffs to update their disaster policies.

Assessing the Competency of Low-Volume Practitioners:
The Joint Commission requires that hospitals verify physician competence using performance data. Yet organizations often have little or no data related to the competency of low- and no-volume physicians. Medical staff leaders are therefore challenged to develop a strategy that guides the hospital's relationship with low- and no-volume providers, and medical staff services departments are challenged to establish systems to verify physician competence. This fully updated book and CD-ROM set offers the necessary tools and strategies for medical staff leaders and professionals to manage the increasing number of low- and no-volume providers and comply with Joint Commission standards.
