Ask the Expert: Does incompetence correlate to low-volume?
Published April 2007
It is a myth that there is a direct correlation between incompetence and low- or no-volume providers.
While low- and no-volume of work may suggest that a physician is likely to have poorer outcomes than a high-volume provider, a lack of volume does not in and of itself mean that the physician is incompetent. It does mean, however, that there is little evidence, sometimes none at all, that the hospital can use to effectively determine competence.
In these instances, use the Greeley competency equation to guide your decisions. The equation asks, what has the provider done, and has he or she done it well? At the end of the day, you must make sure the physician meets your organization's quality standards.
